Turn That Restless Nose into a Confident Working Partner

If your dog would rather chase wildlife, chew the sofa, or bark at nothing than settle — this is for you. Scentwork flips the picture: instead of fighting what your dog naturally wants to do, you become part of the game. Small groups, real environments, and a clear path from first sniff to full search.

Book the Odour Foundation Intro — £30

No experience needed. All breeds and ages welcome.

If any of this sounds like you...

01Your dog chases birds, wildlife, or livestock, and walks have become a battle of vigilance rather than something you enjoy.
02Your dog is full of energy and nothing you try seems to touch the sides, no matter how far you walk them.
03Your dog is bored — and you can see it in the chewing, the barking, the restlessness at home.
04You would love to meet other dog people and get out to different places, but you are not sure where to start.
05Your dog seems more interested in the environment than in you — and you would love to turn that into teamwork instead of competition.

...then start with the Odour Foundation Intro.

Here is what changes when your dog learns to search:

A dog more interested in the hedgerow than in you
A dog who's just as interested in the game you're playing together — because you've become part of what makes the hunt happen.
Restless energy with nowhere to go
A dog properly, mentally tired after a session. Searching burns more energy than a long walk ever could.
Feeling unsure what your dog is trying to tell you
A sharper eye for the subtle signals your dog's always been giving you — a head dip, a change of pace, a shift in tail carriage.
Training that feels like a battle of wills
Your dog becomes the expert, and you get to watch and learn from them. That recognition changes the whole relationship.
Wanting to meet other dog people but not knowing where to start
A small, friendly community of people who get it — working alongside you, in different places, session by session.
No idea how to progress once the basics are covered
A clear pathway — Odour Foundation, then Area Search, Skill Sessions, and Detective Dog Search work, at your dog's pace.

The Odour Foundation Intro

Everyone Starts Here
Give your dog their first taste of scentwork — no experience needed

This is where your dog is introduced to the target odour for the very first time. We'll start with introductions and make sure everyone knows individual dogs' needs. We will then go through the scent kit, which you can take home with you at the end of the session. I'll show you how to introduce your dog to the target odour and start the journey of searching. We also cover your role as a handler, the mechanics of the game, and how and when to reward what you're seeing. There will be time for sniffy breaks and snacks for humans and dogs alike. This is the required first step before joining us for Area Search, Skill Sessions, or Detective Dog Search.

About Clare Parker

Hi, I'm Clare. I've spent 25 years working with dogs and the last 10 teaching scentwork — I've been a Scentwork UK Instructor since 2018 and I'm a WSDA Blue Level Instructor too.

I first came across scentwork about 10 years ago at an agility camp, and it changed how I trained from that point on. I recognised straight away what it could do for my reactive dog Georgie, and for Chloe, my young rescue springer at the time.

My approach is dog-centred, expert-led, non-competitive, and welfare-driven throughout — this isn't about scoreboards, it's about your dog's wellbeing and what searching does for the wider bond between you.

Like anything with dogs, you never stop learning, and they never stop teaching you something new. Scentwork is one of the few activities you can genuinely do anywhere — and it's actually better for being done in as many different places as possible, which is exactly why my sessions move around.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?
+
Odour Foundation Intro: £30 (1hr 40). Area Search: £40 (2 hours). Skill Sessions: £30 (1hr 40, bimonthly, prebookable). Detective Dog Search: £45 (2–4 hours, depending on the "crime"). 1:1: £35. Home Visit: from £40, depending on your location.
My dog has no scentwork experience. Can they still join?
+
Yes — that's exactly who the Odour Foundation Intro is for. It's designed for dogs with no odour foundations at all. We start from scratch, no prior experience needed.
Do I need to do the Odour Foundation Intro before anything else?
+
Yes, for Area Search, Skill Sessions, and Detective Dog Search — your dog needs to know odour first. It's not needed if you want to start with a 1:1 or a Home Visit instead.
What breeds or ages are suitable?
+
Suitable for anyone — all breeds, all ages, human-friendly too. The only real consideration is mobility at some locations, since a few venues have uneven ground or steps.
My dog is reactive. Can they still come?
+
Reactive dogs are very welcome, though it depends on their overall ability to cope in a group situation, and on the other dogs in that session too. If you're not sure, a 1:1 is a great way to learn the game first, before adding other dogs into the picture.
How many dogs are in each session?
+
Groups are 4–8 dogs, depending on venue. Each dog searches one at a time — dogs wait their turn in the car or have a wander in between.
What do I need to bring?
+
A 5-metre safety line, your dog on a harness, treats, water and a bowl, shade cover for your car if needed, plus snacks and a drink for yourself. This will all be listed in the email you get after booking.
What if I need to cancel?
+
Full refund up to 48 hours before the session, due to costs incurred and the ability to fill the space. If I need to cancel, your booking is moved to another event or the session is rescheduled.
How do I book and pay?
+
Book on the website. You'll get an email with payment details and pay by bank transfer. Your booking is confirmed once payment is received — if payment isn't received within 3 days of booking, the booking is cancelled. Questions before booking are welcome at clare@4activepaws.com.
